Autism Assessment

Process

  • ~ 2-hour appointment for parent via Telehealth (Diagnostic Interview)
  • ~ 2-hour appointment for Speech Pathology assessment
  • ~ 2-hour appointment for child in the clinic (ADOS – Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule or alternative) including a feedback session
  • ~ Report is given 4 to 6 weeks after assessment is completed
  • ~ Please note: Additional appointments may be required in some cases, and additional fees will apply. This will be discussed with you if applicable.

Referrals and Rebates

  • A pediatrician’s referral is required.
  • Children aged under 13 who have been referred for an autism assessment by a pediatrician or child psychiatrist can claim a rebate from Medicare of $89.65 (or higher if you have reached your Medicare safety net) for the appointments where the child is present.
  • If your child is 13 years of age or over, Medicare will not pay any rebate, and so the full fee for the assessment applies. This can be claimed on your Private Health Insurance (please check if your insurance will rebate diagnostic assessments).

Additional Appointments

We will do our best to complete all assessments and reports within the allocated time. In complex cases, extra appointments may be required, and an additional fee of $220.00 per hour will be charged. This will be discussed with you as needed.

On the Day

  • The ADOS Assessment may or may not be conducted with the parent in the room, depending on which ADOS Module needs to be undertaken. Module 1, Module 2, and the Toddler Module require a parent/carer in the room (which is under the age of around 4 or 5 for most children).
  • Bring a small snack
  • Advise us in advance if you do not have a carer to look after your child during the parent/carer part of the assessment
  • Bring any other reports that you have regarding the health and development of your child
